Baby Sleep - 7 Tips To Getting Them To Sleep
One of the most common complaints of new parents is the inability to get babies to sleep. When a baby refuses to sleep, the child's parents often must also sacrifice sleep. Further, babies that refuse to sleep are often restless and cranky, making the day even more difficult for new parents. This article will share 7 tips you can use to encourage your baby to sleep.

Tip #1: Stick To A Schedule

Like most adults, babies like routine. Once encouraged through consistent training, a baby will often eat, sleep, nurse and do other activities at the same time each day or night. Try to promote a sleep routine for your baby by getting them ready for bed at the same time each night and waking them at the same time each morning.

Tip #2: Be Realistic

Even though babies like routine in the same way most adults do, you still need to develop a realistic frame of mind regarding when and how much your child sleeps. Your baby's sleep needs will be different than your needs. And it is likely they will wake at least once during each night. Planing ahead for these minor inconveniences will prevent you from becoming frustrated.

Tip #3: Relax And Calm Your Baby

A baby that is relaxed and calm throughout the day is more likely to sleep peacefully than a baby that is anxious or excited during the day. If you notice that your baby is sleeping fitfully during the evening, try to take note of circumstances throughout the day that may have led to his or her fitful sleep.

Tip #4: Set A Consistent Eating Schedule

Often, babies will forget to eat during the day. Obviously, it is the parents' responsibility to feed the child, but without prodding, a baby can be distracted by playtime or other activities. Try to feed your baby at the same times throughout each day. This will teach them that eating is typically done during the day while sleeping is usually done during the night. Setting a consistent eating schedule helps reinforce this training.

Tip #5: Give Your Baby A Bath

A bath can have a soothing effect on a baby. Try to give your baby a bath just prior to putting them down for the night. After a bath, your baby will likely be relaxed and calm. Such feelings encourage sleep.

Tip #6: Going From Light To Deep Sleep

Most babies do not fall instantly into deep sleep. Instead, they go through a process of sleep where the first 15-20 minutes are spent in light sleep. You may find that your baby wakes once or twice during this time. You may even find your baby trying to stay awake during this light sleep. Often, your baby simply does not want to be alone. Invest an extra 10 minutes with your baby. Stay with them until they fall into a deep sleep. Once they do, the chances of sleeping peacefully throughout the night is greater.

Tip #7: Nestle Down

This is related to the tip above. As mentioned, babies often want to know that you are there. After rocking or feeding your baby, lie down next to them so they can feel your body next to their own. This snuggling provides great comfort to a baby and can help them fall into a deep, peaceful sleep.

When your baby does not sleep, you often must sacrifice sleep, too. But, there are many things you can do to encourage your baby to sleep peacefully throughout the night. Try to apply the tips above. Chances are, you will find your baby not only adopting a regular sleep schedule, but also sleeping more restfully each night.
